Refill An Ink Cartridge

Chances are that you’ve seen one or two late night infomercials that advertise the printer cartridge refill kit that seem to make easy work of refilling ink cartridges.  If you’ve ever tried it, you have probably found that it’s not quite that easy and the quality was subpar.  It depends on which brand and style of printer and cartridge you have as to whether it’s actually worth the time, expense and hassle to refill an ink cartridge.

For most, it goes without saying that professional-grade printers or high detail and quality photo printers should really never operate with refilled ink cartridges, at least not ones you’ve refilled yourself.

Recycled cartridges that have been refurbished by the manufacturer can usually be trusted and often come with a warranty that is similar to purchasing a cartridge new.  However, if you take it upon yourself to refill an ink cartridge for your very expensive printer and the ink ends up causing damage, you’ve probably effectively voided the manufactures warranty and could be out a few hundred dollars or even more.

There are a few printer brands and styles that make it worth your while to refill an ink cartridge or two.  Lexmark is a brand name in the printer industry that is widely known for being among the least expensive to purchase but the most expensive to own.

Aside from frequent malfunction problem, the ink cartridges tend to be about twice the price of the printer itself.  At this price it’s really not worth it to most people to buy ink replacements, but often they will attempt to refill the ink cartridge.  Fortunately, Lexmark cartridges are among the simpler ones to refill and because they are smaller and use less ink, you will get more refills out of one kit than other printers.

On the other end of the spectrum from Lexmark is HP, another well known computer equipment and printer company.  HP’s printers are reasonably priced, but so are their ink cartridges.

On top of being much more affordable than other printer brands, it’s also very difficult to refill an ink cartridge manufactured by HP.  Many fail at this endeavor and end up causing damage to their printers.  It makes little economic sense to attempt to refill ink cartridges made by HP when for just $10 or $15 more you can purchase a brand new one that is guaranteed to work and cause no damage to your precious printer.
